Seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
