Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
