At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
